Community Description

Ramos is a neighborhood in Zona da Leopoldina, in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil.
Traditional Rio neighborhood and one of the main strongholds of samba and chorinho carioca, it borders the neighborhoods Olaria, to the north, Complexo do Alemão, to the west, Bonsucesso, to the south, and Maré, which is on the other side of Avenida Brasil, to the east . Its HDI, in 2000, was 0.857, the 47th best in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
The region of the current neighborhood of Ramos belongs to Fazenda do Engenho da Pedra (later Fazenda NS de Bonsucesso), within Sesmaria de Inhaúma.
Still in the 17th century, pioneers such as Estradas Velha do Engenho da Pedra and Estrada Nova do Engenho da Pedra (currently Av. Teixeira de Castro) were pioneered, which provided access to the region. There were other paths that communicated with the coast, where they arrived at “Cais de Pedra”, a huge rock next to Praia do Apicú (currently Praia de Ramos).
In 1868, with the inauguration of the Leopoldina Railway, captain José Fonseca Ramos began the construction of a train station on his farm, since the railway crossed his lands. This initiative, which aimed to provide greater comfort to his family and households, gave rise to one of the most traditional neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro.

The region gained great development when it was urbanized by the engineer Joaquim Vieira Ferreira Sobrinho, who, around 1910, founded Vila Gérson and the Gérson school. To this day, several public places still bear the name of this engineer's relatives, such as Rua Miguel Vieira Ferreira (his father), Rua Gerson Ferreira (his son) and Rua Ruth Ferreira (his wife).

In the 20th century, Ramos was one of the strongholds of the elite of the so-called Leopoldina Zone. The Social Ramos Clube was frequented by enlightened residents and invitations to its salons were sought after. In 1938, Cine Rosário was one of the largest in Rio de Janeiro with its modern art deco design.

Among the carnival groups in the neighborhood, the Imperatriz samba school stands out, eight times champion of the Rio carnival. Grêmio Recreativo Cacique de Ramos, founded in 1961, is based in Olaria. Ramos has always positioned himself with enormous relevance in Rio de Janeiro samba.

Big names in Brazilian music are linked to the neighborhood, such as composers Pixinguinha, Villa-Lobos and, more recently, Zeca Pagodinho and Almir Guineto.

Pixinguinha composed the Anthem of Ramos in 1965, for the neighborhood's 80th birthday celebrations.

Villa-Lobos became a regular when he met his future wife during a visit to a friend, a musician, who lived in the neighborhood. He even became one of the founders of the Recreio de Ramos carnival group.

Zeca Pagodinho and Almir Guineto are linked to the name of Cacique de Ramos, who is also the birthplace of groups such as Fundo de Quintal. In 2009, the Imperatriz samba school, through the plot "Imperatriz… You just want to show that you can do samba too" paid homage to the neighborhood of Ramos in Marquês de Sapucaí.

In 2012, the Pacifying Police Units (UPP) program was taken to the group of favelas that protect the neighborhood in the South. This group of communities is part of Complexo do Alemão and after this process prevents violence and crime rates from the entire environment.
